There's a particular kind of disorientation that comes with living somewhere temporarily. You know it won't last, so you don't fully commit — you don't unpack everything, you don't learn the neighborhood, you don't let yourself settle in. And as a result, the whole experience feels like you're slightly outside of your own life.
At Scarella Stays, we've thought a lot about this. It's one of the reasons we design our homes the way we do — not just furnished, but genuinely livable. Because we believe that the best extended stay experience is one where you forget, at least for a while, that it's temporary.
Here's what we've learned about making any stay — whether it's two weeks or six months — feel like home.
Unpack everything. It sounds obvious, but most people living out of a suitcase never fully unpack. The act of putting your things away — hanging your clothes, organizing your toiletries, setting up your workspace — signals to your brain that this is your space now. It's worth the twenty minutes.
Establish a morning routine. The fastest way to feel at home anywhere is to create a consistent morning ritual. Find the coffee shop you'll go to three times a week. Discover the park where you'll take your morning walk. Build the small rituals that anchor your day.
Cook at least a few times a week. This is why we invest so much in our kitchens. Cooking in a space makes it yours. It fills the home with familiar smells, it gives you a reason to explore the local farmers markets, and it's one of the most grounding things you can do in an unfamiliar place.
Learn one neighborhood deeply. Rather than trying to see everything, pick one neighborhood and really get to know it. Find the best coffee, the best dinner spot, the best place to read on a Sunday afternoon. Depth beats breadth when you're building a sense of place.
The extended stay is, in many ways, the best way to experience a city. You get past the tourist layer and into the texture of daily life. You become, for a while, a local. And that's exactly the experience we try to make possible at Scarella Stays.
